John A. Dowell is a brother of Elijah R. Dowell buried here. They were 2 of 12 children of James Board Dowell (1791-1860) and Barbara Shacklett (1794-1874) who lived in Stith Valley in Meade County, Kentucky.

John Dowell was married (1) to Melissa W. Stith (daughter of Griffin Stith) on January 2, 1843. John Dowell was next married (2) to Judith Ann Jared (or Jarrett) on October 18, 1852. John and Judith share the same headstone.

John and Judith's daughter Eva Barbara Dowell was married to William Burnis Barnes on February 26, 1884. William's sister Mollie wrote that they were married by Brother Bain, a Baptist minister at the home of Eva's parents located 8 miles northwest of Chillicothe, Missouri.

John A. Dowell died Oct. 12, 1895 without a will. Judieth Dowell, Admrs. Heirs: James Dowell, Albert M. Dowell, David T. Dowell, Alexander Dowell, Calvin Dowell, Arvin Dowell, Eva Barnes, Wilmouth Pusey. (Probate Records of Livingston County, Missouri, Vol. 3, Box 712.)
