Helen Louise Solum
Helen Louise Solum was born Oct. 10, 1929 at Havre, Mont. Her parents were Karen Spaberg and Edwin Solum, and she was one of five children. Helen's father had homesteaded south of Inverness where she grew up and attended Rathbun Country school. She graduated from Rudyard High School in 1947. Sept. 21 of that same year, she married Jacob M. Richter in Great Falls. They made their home in Inverness and farmed south of town. Helen worked hard as a homemaker and mother, and when her children grew up and left home she decided to go into the nursing field. In 1973-74 she attended Clover Park Vo-Tech Institute in Washington state where she received a two-year nursing degree and became an L.P.N. In the years that followed she worked at the Havre Head Start, the Great Falls Crises Center, and the Liberty County Nursing Home in Chester. When her husband, Jake, died in an accident in Aug. of 1986 Helen moved into the Sweetgrass Lodge in Chester and lived there until June 30, 1987 when she mysteriously disappeared. Her body was found in an abandoned barn near Browning Nov. 27th and authorities suspect foul play. Helen was 57 years old.
Helen had been active in the United Methodist Parish in Inverness and later in the Methodist Church in Chester. She had been active in the Rudyard Saddle Club for many years.
Helen is survived by three sons, Ken of Sandy, Utah; Bob of Cut Bank; and Richard of Cody, Wyo.; one daughter, Karen Kliev of Midland, Texas; 3 grandchildren; her mother Karen Solum of Rudyard; three brothers, Ken Solum of Havre; Orville and Marcel Solum of Rudyard; one sister, Evelyn Griffin of Puyallup, Wash.; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, her father, and an infant son, Lloyd.
