Alvin died in the Battle of Vicksburg during the Civil War. Page 355 in the History of Stephenson County, Illinois published by the Western Historical Company in 1880 shows he died of wounds on May 24, 1863, and was serving in the 93rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Page 339 of the same book shows he was in Company G of the 93rd Illinois, and that he mustered in on August 11, 1862 and also shows the death date as May 24, 1863. He shows wd. for wounded, so I imagine May 22, 1863 may have been the date he was wounded and the tombstone carver put that on instead of the death date.
