STERLING - Virgil W. Yohn, age 90 of Sterling, died Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
Virgil was born on December 4, 1928 in Sterling, the son of Lee and Hazel (McLindsay) Yohn.
He attended Wyanet School becoming a letterman in basketball and track. Virgil is a United States Army Veteran and served in the Korean War. He married Marie Saraceno on July 6, 1956 in Chicago. Virgil was a heavy equipment operator, starting out in the 1950s with Kinney Excavating and retiring from John Loos and Sons in 1990. In his years of work, he knew a lot of the history of local landmarks and buildings, helping with the Imagination Station in Kilgore Park and the Grist Mill in Franklin Grove. Virgil loved life and didn't want to leave it. In the hospital stays, they ask the mandatory "Do you want to be resuscitated?" his answer was always, "You bet!" As a child growing up in the 30s times were hard, but you wouldn't know it by Virgil's rich stories of skinny dipping, horse riding, train jumping childhood. He grew into a young man with love of motorcycles, cars and flying his Piper Cub. Settling down to become a dad who taught his children the simple things in life, was what was important to Virgil. It was being around the water on the Rock and Mississippi Rivers, the joy of a spring rainfall, taking in the sights and smells of camping, the woods and the peaceful feeling of being around a campfire together. As everyone got a little older, time became more precious and he and his family cherished family nights or getting together with friends. They still managed to hit flea markets and casinos, reveling in the little triumphs of finding a bargain or winning some cash and ending the evening with a Dunkin' Donuts coffee- winner buys.
"Thank you Dad for teaching us the love of life. We will miss you and celebrate you. Extra sweetner, extra cream, we raise our cups to you, Dad."
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marie; two daughters, Denise (Michael) Tanner and Kelly (Marisa Garner) Yohn; one son, Craig (Christine) Yohn; five grandchildren, Rayce Yohn, Derek Wade, Ashley (Corey Anderson) Gutierrez, Josh Jensen and Adam Jensen; two great-grandchildren, Elliott and Leonidas Hemminger and four brothers, Charles Yohn, Tom Shook, John Shook and Rusty Shook.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mae; one grandson, Nicholas Yohn and one granddaughter, Danielle Wade.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 9:00-11:00 A.M. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will conclude at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
