David proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean War. Upon his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In September 1944, he transferred to the John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore where he served as a medical student for the remainder of World War II. At the conclusion the war, David completed his medical studies and graduated from John Hopkins Medical School in 1948. He participated in the internal medicine residency program at John Hopkins Hospital during 1948 to 1950.

At the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, David was recalled to active duty by the U.S. Navy as lieutenant and was reassigned to the U.S. Army. David served in combat with the 7th Calvary Regiment in Korea from 1950-51, rising to the rank of regimental surgeon and earning a combat medical badge.
