Wm. Palmer is one of the highly respected residents of this village, with his home on the Antrim
road. Mr. Palmer was born in England, Aug. 15, 1827, and came to America in 1850, locating near Rochester, N.Y., where he was a railroad inspector for a few years, and had to make two trips daily over 14 miles of road. But the finding of more than a dozen people on the track, killed by trains, got on his nerves and he jumped the job. He came to Michigan in 1872 and to Mancelona in 1885, where he has since resided. He worked for one year for John Otis when he owned the furnace, and has since put in about 30 years in the employ of the Antrim Iron Co.

He now owns a nice farm located in the southern part of the village and devotes some of his time to that industry. He set out a nice orchard a few years ago, not with the idea of benefiting from it when it grew to bearing, but for the good to accrue to posterity. Mr. Palmer was first married in 1854 at Rochester, N.Y. to which union six children were born, five of whom are now alive, Edward Palmer of Tacoma, Wash., and Harry Palmer, Mesdames Savery Hoopfer, Moses Ringler and John Barton, who reside near Elk Rapids. He was married a second time in 1899, by which union he has one daughter.

Last fall an auto was sent over here for Mr. Palmer and wife and daughter to attend a family reunion in Milton township, given in his honor. At that gathering in addition to his children, their wives and husbands, also several nephews and nieces, there were 24 of his grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two of his grandsons are at Camp Custer and one is in France with Uncle Sam’s soldiers.
