Henry Riegel was born 18 February 1828 in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States to Johann George Riegel and Anna Maria Lesher. His family moved to Allen Township, Darke, Ohio when he was a young child. On 24 October 1850, he married Lydia Ann Furry and they had many children, including some that died as infants.

Henry died 25 March 1916.
