Henry Schmidt was born at Ellinwood, Kansas, on October 26, 1880, the son of German immigrants Christian and Augusta Schmidt. On August 30, 1910, he was married to Rosa Malone at Chase, Kansas. They made their home at Ellinwood, where Henry and his father were engaged in the business of making cement blocks.

After his first wife died in 1942, Henry moved to California. On October 2, 1943, he was married to Fannie Ashworth at Pomona, where he made his home for the next 14 years. He died there on June 30, 1958.

He was survived by his second wife, sons Ray and Gilbert, daughters Irene (Crouse) and Regina (Freund), 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was also survived by three sisters, Louise (Rose), Augusta (Storm) and Emma (Solken). In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Augusta, who died in 1912.
