John Wirey

John Wirey died at his residence in Hamblen township, Jan. 30, 1890. He was born near Bremen, Germany, December 22, 1820. At the age of 24 he left Germany, crossed the briny ocean, and emigrated to Ohio. In 1852 he removed with his family to this State. Here he settled on a small tract of land in the woods, to which he has added acre after acre by his honest labors, so that his family are left in good circumstances.

He leaves a wife and seven children, all living in this State, except one son who is living in Nebraska.

He was a man of stern decisive character, but one who was honored and esteemed by all who know him. His loss will long be felt in the community in which he lived, for all were accustomed to go to him for advice and counsel.

Thus one by one the pioneers are passing away.

He joined the Lutheran Church at the age of 14, and remained a member until 1882, when he united with the Christian Church, of which he remained a faithful member until his death.
