The son of James W. Wheeler and Nancy Ida "Mamie" Colbert, John married Sarah Margaret "Maggie" Fry on 05 Sep 1890 in Lincoln County, Missouri. She was a native of Missouri and was born on 04 Feb 1874 or 1875.

John was a farmer. He and Maggie were the parents of 4 children. The family lived in Calumet in Pike County, Missouri.

Maggie died on 08 Apr 1902, leaving John with 4 very young children. She was most likely buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lincoln County, but this has yet to be verified with a burial record or obituary.

After Maggie passed away, John and the children lived with his widowed mother, Nancy Wheeler, in Calumet. She died in 1923. He remained in Calumet and Elsberry areas through the late 1930's.

John retired from farming in 1939. After that, he soon moved to Hartford, Madison County, Illinois and made his home with his youngest child, Melva Hess, and her husband, Cecil.

After moving to Hartford, John retained his membership in the United Brethren Church.

In the years that he lived with Melva, he enjoyed relatively good health for his age. He was able to make trips into the business district of Hartford up until his final illness.

The family held a surprise birthday dinner on 23 May 1950 at the home of his daughter, Melva, to celebrate his 83rd birthday. 4 generations of the Wheeler family attended the get-together, including 3 of John's siblings, Charles, Dora and Rebecca, his children and grandchildren, as well as a number of others.

John became seriously ill on 13 Oct 1952 and was hospitalized at Wood River township Hospital the next day. He died there at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 24 days.

He was survived by 3 daughters, Osie Pickett of Hamburg, Illinois, Martha Sheaffer of Eldred, Illinois, and Melva Hess of Hartford; 1 son, Sylvester Wheeler of Wood River, Illinois; 1 brother, Charles Wheeler of Wood River; and 2 sisters, Dora Kitson of Wood River, and Sarah Koster of St. Charles, Missouri.

Visitation was held at the Streeper Funeral Home in Wood River on 19 Oct 1952. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning and were officiated by the Reverend Harold Ottwell.

The body was then transported to Oak Ridge Cemetery near Elsberry, Missouri. Graveside rites were performed at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 20 Oct 1952.
