Vern "Vernie" Akright, age 89, of Lincoln St., Elkhorn, WI. died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Williams Bay Care Center, Williams Bay, WI. Vernie was born October 20, 1921 in Readstown, WI to Jacob and Valletta (Faith) Akright. He married the love of his life Betty Jean Green on February 26, 1945 in Viola, WI. He retired after working many years at Hawthorne Melody. He was a friendly man, making friends at every turn. He enjoyed a good practical joke. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, painting, tinkering with wood (especially the birdhouses) and his CB handle, "Bluegill". Vernie served in the US Navy in WW II in the Pacific Theater on the submarine, PomPom. He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Betty Jean of Elkhorn, his children: Richard (Sheri) of San Rafael, CA., Patricia (Jack) Andrews of Tucson, AZ., Michael (Celeste) of Columbia, SC., Barbara Bougher of Marengo, IL., Carole Wilson of Phoenix, AZ., Steven of Elkhorn, WI. and Kevin (Carrie) of Snoqaulmie, WA. Vernie is further survived by his sisters: Stella Blood of Lake Geneva, WI and Avis Offerdahl of Boscobel, WI., 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many good friends. Vernie was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles, his half brothers: John and Silas Garlic.

Vernie was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services for Vernie will be Friday, January 21, 2011 at 7:00PM at the Haase-Derrick-Lockwood Funeral Home (730 N. Wisconsin St. Elkhorn, WI) with Rev. Jim Kennedy officiating. Memorial gathering will be on Friday from 4:00PM until the time of services at the funeral home.
