MISSOULA — Patricia “Pat” Adams Pierpoint, 92, passed away at The Village in Missoula on Oct. 7, 2018. She was attended in her last hours by all four of her children, Alan, Eric, Kim and Marta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Pierpoint, and survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Born in Berkeley, California, on April 18, 1926, Pat graduated from Redlands High School in 1943 and four years later from the University of Redlands where her mother, Bess Adams, taught in the English Department. Pat then married Dr. Alan Porter. Three children quickly followed. The pair divorced in 1959, a watershed year in the family, for it was in October of that year that she exchanged vows with Bob, CBS news correspondent and acquaintance from her college years. The family re-settled in Bethesda, Maryland. Pierpoint adopted Pat’s three children; daughter Marta soon arrived to complete the family.

For the next three decades, Pat’s life was filled with both the blessings of family and the challenges of her new role in the intense political world of our nation’s capital. Bob served in the White House press corps through six presidential administrations, from Eisenhower to Carter. Few lines of work are as demanding on spouses as that of the highest echelon of broadcast journalism, as Pat soon discovered. Family life is hostage to the news cycle; any crisis, domestic or international, disrupts family plans.

Pat remained a rock of support throughout these years, serving as hostess of countless parties while running the household and guiding four children through childhood and adolescence. A beautiful woman all her life, Pat took naturally to the party circuit. Parties at the Pierpoint home were coveted affairs, occasionally reported in the style sections of the Washington papers. Pat could work a room as easily as she prepared gourmet dinners and bandaged skinned knees.

That glittery life came to a close when Bob retired. With three of her children settled in California, Bob and Pat left the political whirlwind behind and purchased a home overlooking the ocean at Bodega Bay. After a few years they moved to Santa Barbara to be closer to friends. Throughout this phase they spent summers at the family vacation property in West Yellowstone, where Bob could indulge his passion for fishing while Pat enjoyed the wonders of nature and a glass of Chardonnay with an ice cube in it as she chatted with friends in the cool of the evening.

When Bob passed in 2011, Pat returned to Redlands and then moved to Missoula, where daughter Marta had already put down roots and could supervise Pat’s care. Pat’s other children rotated through several times a year to spend time with their beloved Mom. Her final passing was peaceful.

Services will be in Redlands, California, on Nov. 3. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Pierpoint-Adams Memorial Endowed Scholarship/The University of Redlands/Office of Development/P.O.Box 3080/Redlands, CA 92373.
