Isaiah Stevens, the oldest child of Nathaniel and Mollie Stevens, was born in Windham, ME., where he resided until 21 years of age, receiving a common school education. In 1830 he moved to Providence, RI., and attended school one year. He then returned to ME. where he married Mary V. Hall on March 25, 1836. She died July 3, 1859. To their union were born six children; one son and five daughters.

Isaiah married Rebecca S. Coombs, on December 6, 1860, in Hallowell, Kennebec County, ME.. They remained in Maine until 1864 and then sailed to California; and immediately located to Mendocino county and to his estate at Little River in 1865. In 1865 he was appointed postmaster of the Little River post-office.
