HON. DAVID HAROLD PEERY (1824-1901)
Investment Banker - Entrepreneur -Politician - Religious Leader - Pioneer

A Virginian from Tazewell County. He was a resident and successful merchant in Burke's Garden. He served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1862, he volunteered and entered the Confederate Army of Eastern Kentucky, as assistant commissary under General Humphrey Marshal.

After six family members had died, mostly of Typhoid fever, during the Civil War, he emigrated with the remaining family members from Burke's Garden, Tazewell County, to Utah. Included in the party was four year old Lettie, his sole surviving child of three of his first marriage, and his mother-in-law, Louisa Ward Higginbotham and her three surviving children--Simon, Letitia and Francis.

On June 4, 1864, they left Omaha in three covered wagons, each with ox teams, with an independent company (Captain William Pritchett). They crossed the plains, arriving in Salt Lake City on August 31, 1864. They eventually settled in Ogden, Utah.

About seven months after arriving in Utah, David married Letitia, younger sister of his first wife. They eventually settled in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, a small town 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, where he became a prominent citizen. They had ten children, seven boys and three girls. Two of the girls died under two years of age.
