HARRISBURG - Mr. Ted Goad, of Harrisburg, departed this life Sunday morning, March 4, 2006 at Woodbriar Nursing Home in Harrisburg at the age of 97. He was born Aug.5, 1908, in Marco, Ind., the son of Robert Franklin Goad and Martha Jane Fearnot Goad. In 1913-14 the family moved from Bloom-field, Ind. to Whitehall. The original farm home was a log cabin, and the family grew, built or sewed all of their needs. Ted began working with horses at an early age and when 11 years old was hauling logs, which was normally the work of an adult. In the great influenza epidemic of 1918, Ted was sent by his mother each morning to check neighbor houses for those who had died during the night. Under his father's direction, Ted and his brothers built coffins, collected the bodies and saw to their burial. He continued to dig graves for neighbors and friends who applied to him during his adult life. On Nov. 5, 1927, Ted married Ruth Mae Sims. They were married for 62 years until her death in 1989. Ted always worked hard to support his family and at one time took on the task of trimming railroad ties by hand so that he could be near Ruth when a child was due. Ted took pride in doing a good job, keeping his word and in being a good neighbor. He loved farming and nature and enjoyed a good joke, especially at another's expense. He was not a traveler, preferring to stay at home; however he enjoyed having many visitors over and loved playing horseshoes. In addition to his wife Ruth, Ted was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings and three daughters, Lois and Louise (infant twins) and Betty Hauptman-Kinsaul; and a granddaughter, Alice Whit-ney. Survivors include a son, Andrew Goad and his wife Charlene of Murphysboro, Ill., four daughters, Ora Lee Delcamp and her husband Richard of Ann Arbor, Mich., Elizabeth McArthur of Harrisburg, Yvonne McNeil and her husband Michael of Wayne, Mich., and Joyce Del Guidice and her husband Paul of Jackson, Mich. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; plus many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Weston Funeral Service Chapel in Harrisburg. Interment will follow in Tyre Cemetery near Cherry Valley. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today.
