John's birth year for his memorial is based on the 1880 Census, in Baxter County, AR, dated June 1880. John was enumerated in his parent's household. John is aged 19 (1861), and his brother Sidney is aged 18 (1862).
Notice the 1900 Census: John and his brother Sidney are enumerated in their own separate households, in Baxter County, AR. Yet, their birth dates are identical ... April 1862.
Note: Sidney's headstone shows a birth year of 1862.
Therefore, unless new evidence is revealed, the birth year of 1861 is being used for John's memorial.

J. N. Curlee received word this
week that John Stone, a former cit-
izen of this place, had been run over
by an automobile near his home in
Mathis, Texas, and killed.
Mr. Stone and wife and Sidney
Stone and wife were out driving near
Mathis. In some way Mr. Stone killed
his engine and got out of his car to
crank it, when a car from the rear
drove up, supposedly at high rate of
speed, hitting him. He died almost
instantly, his neck being broken.
Mr. Stone was well known here.
