She was born Dec 10,1921 Wheatfield, Ind., to Winford and Lizzie (Brown) Lewis.
Mrs. Smith retired as a bookkeeper with Sears Roebuck and Co., Michigan City. She was a former president of Joy School PTA and had taught Sunday school for many years at Evergreen Baptist Church.
On Feb. 18, 1950, in Michigan City, she married Matthew "Kie" Smith, who died April 21, 2003.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Vicki Hodges; and two brothers, Elmer and Clarence Lewis.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet Rae Constantinov of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Judy Granacki of Las Vegas; one son, Clarence (Maki) of Chicago; seven grandchildren Detra Mills, Debra, Monica and Steve Granacki, Matthew Tipton, Jerry Hodges II and Janko Constantinov; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Will and Anna Zonyk, both of Michigan City, Pearl Firebaugh of La Porte and Ethel Bryant of Portage; and her caregiver, Maria Feret of Chicago.
The funeral will be Thursday at noon at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with Rev. Jonathan Rumley officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 9 a.m. until the service. Entombment will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Chapel of the Chimes Mausoleum, Michigan City.
