Bernard Donald Abeyta, 75, passed peacefully from this world on August 24, 2019 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.
A visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd. Ankeny, IA). A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 30, 2019 at Lutheran Church of Hope - Ankeny (520 NW 36th St., Ankeny, IA) on Friday, August 30 at 10:00. A luncheon at the church and burial of ashes at Ankeny Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
Bernie was born in Aguilar, CO to Adam and Connie Abeyta. In his youth, he spent many hours playing with friends and cousins in town and in the hills of southern Colorado. At a very young age, he worked with his parents on the ranch and in the gas station his family owned. His father died when Bernie was a teenager and he continued to run the gas station until he graduated (Valedictorian) from Aguilar High School and left for college. He graduated from Colorado State University with a Mechanical Engineering degree and began his career at John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny, Iowa, where he worked 35 years until his retirement in 2009.
Bernie married Dania Clark-Lempers soon after coming to Iowa and to this union,
a daughter, Angela, and son, Adam, were born. He was an exceptional father, giving his children equal amounts of discipline and unconditional love. Bernie was active in Ankeny Jaycees, took flying lessons and bought an airplane with two friends, and traveled back to Colorado every summer – while making close, lasting relationships with many co-workers at John Deere.
In 1981, Bernie and Debra were married and they combined their families as one with Angela, Adam and Jessica. In his free time, Bernie spent many hours on home-improvement and landscaping projects, running (numerous races and 19 marathons, including Boston), learning to play guitar, playing games, and cracking jokes for his children and grandchildren. He was a loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather. His sharp mind, incredible memory, many talents and sense of humor will be sorely missed.
After retirement from John Deere, Bernie and Debra traveled to Europe, China, Spain, Mexico, Canada and many U.S. states. Bernie always held his home state of Colorado close to his heart and loved owning a vacation home in Colorado Springs, CO where we hiked, biked, and took many day-trips on the Harley around the area.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Debra, daughter, Angela (Brendan), son, Adam (Deb), and daughter, Jessica (Jason); and grandchildren, Madeleine, Fiona, Isabelle and Dominic. In addition, he is survived by his former wife Dania (Jacques); his sisters, Ida Mae and Vivien (Joe); and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank, and nephews, Gregory and Wesley Febbraro.
