Lewis Roger Cherry, 92, of Alvarado, Texas, went to be with the Lord Friday, August 23, 2019 among his loving family in his home. Lewis was born in Moore, Oklahoma on November 7, 1926 to John and Hazel Cherry. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Earlene Cherry, and his 6 children; Elaine Cherry, Doug Cherry, Laurie and husband John McIntosh, Carol and husband Dan Ward, Steve and wife Edwina Cherry and Tim and wife Ellen Cherry, as well as 14 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward, Edwin, Holland, Richard, Bill, sister Franky, and daughter-in-law Rose, wife of Doug.
Lewis moved to Texas with his family and graduated from Mansfield High School. He met the love of his life,Earlene, and they married on October 16, 1948. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Cleburne, TX. He then was employed by Convair, which later became General Dynamics, as a Tool and Die Maker. Finally he worked at Electro-Hydraulics Corp in Everman, Texas from 1962-1993 and retired as Vice President.
Lewis’ passions in life included farming, gardening, the Dallas Cowboys, Alvarado Indian football and the Texas Longhorns. Lewis graduated Mansfield High School in 1947. He supported his children and grandchildren in all activities and found joy in serving his community as a Volunteer Fireman, school booster club member, and at Thompson Baptist Church. He served faithfully at this church for over 70 years as a teacher, deacon, treasurer, and at times worship leader. His greatest passion was serving the Lord and leading people to faith in Jesus Christ. He was faithful to this calling until the very end.
