She was next with Charles Carroll but they never married, leaving Robert Johnson and taking their son, Charles Johnson, with her.
Charles Carroll was previously married and had children: Leonard, Darrel, Elnora, Bessie, Melvin, and Marvin Carroll.
Charles changed his name to Earl Charles Johnson and fled the state with Emma, her two children, and his sons, Melvin and Marvin Carroll.
He changed all six of their surnames to Johnson as well and they headed to California.

Joseph was born in Colorado, during the families flight from Oklahoma.

By the 1940 census, she lists herself as a widow and only children, Charles and Joe are living with her
Emma never formally divorced her first husband, Robert Johnson, until Sep 22, 1947, even though they had not seen each other or lived with each other since around 1921.
She found out that he had passed away and she had had no reason to get a divorce.
About that time, Emma married Lloyd Hallengren. He was in his 60's and had never been married.
Lloyd died in 1956.
Emma Then married Clarence Sweet in California, Feb 4, 1965. His burial not known to link him
