Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Celestine and Lester, and brothers James and Reid.

Sam was born on February 11, 1940 to Lester and Celestine Dresser in Tulare, California. Sam loved his big family which included James, Reid, Richard, Paul, Celestine, and Leland. Sam's family lived in many parts of California. During WWII his father tried to sign up for the war but since he had 5 boys, they assigned him to stay state side and work for a lumber company in the Placerville area. It was there Sam grew to love the forest and nature. After the war, the family settled in Bakersfield, where he met his high school sweetheart, Joan Saunders. He often said he was hit like a "lightening bolt" and they fell in love. They married in 1959 in Arvin, CA, and 11 months later welcomed their first daughter, Rebecca. Karen followed two years later, and Mark three years following.

They moved to Paradise, California in 1964, which became home. Sam and Joan both became teachers, and Sam taught math, science, and history for 5ththrough 8th grades for 23 years at Concow School. He was a teaching principal for some years and developed a unique science education program that raised school test scores. Sam will be remembered by his students fondly as an excited educator. He loved teaching and made sure each person understood on his or her level. His legacy as a teacher will be felt for generations as those he taught will continue to teach the next generation.

Soon after arriving in Paradise, they joined the Gold Nugget Days committee and helped to build the Gold Nugget Museum in 1981. He served both as President and on the Board of Directors. He and Joan developed the Pioneer school program that served thousands of children in the Northern California area. Sam's influence was also felt on the Town Council and as Mayor of Paradise. He was a member of the forming committee of the Paradise Performing Arts Center, and served as its first Treasurer. Sam was recently honored by the Elks as Senior Man of the Year, and both Sam and Joan were recognized as Volunteers of the Year. Sam and Joan devoted their lives to the Town of Paradise and to their wonderful family and friends.

Sam's legacy is ingrained in each person he touched. Sam lead as he lived, with integrity, honor, honesty, service, with unwavering, unconditional support and love. Always the teacher, whether in the workshop, classroom, nature, or in life lessons, Sam changed our lives for the better. Sam devoted his life selflessly to making everything better around him. His country, his community, his students, his friends and his family will forever be in debt to him. Forever in our hearts, we love and miss you.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 10:00 am at the Paradise Performing Arts Center. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Gold Nugget Museum School Education Fund. Condolences and donations can be sent to Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home in Chico.
