Frank Elroy Best passed away on August 17, 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Frank, the son of Frank Best and Dorris Best (nee Martin) was one of four sons. His brothers were Donald, Phillip, and William; Frank was preceded in death by William and Donald. Frank was born in Council Bluffs, IA on January 10, 1920 shortly before his parents move to Chadron NE. Growing up in Chadron, Frank attended Chadron Teachers College (now Chadron State College) and married Bertha Hilda Kennedy.

During his marriage to Bertha, he had 6 children, Richard, Robert, Ronald, Marilyn, Teresa, and Thomas. Frank was preceded in death by two of his sons, Ronald and Richard. Frank’s marriage to Bertha ended early with her death in 1984 and went on to marry Evelyn Lois Best (nee Solberg). Frank was also preceded in death with Evelyn passing away in 2018.

Frank was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve after Officer Training School (OTS) during World War II and went on to serve in the South Pacific on the USS Shikellamy (AO-90) gasoline tanker providing vital fuel support to naval combatants operating the war against Japan. At the end of the war, Frank remained in the Naval Reserve attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

After the end of World War II, Frank entered the civilian work force as a civilian engineer first in the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and then moving to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Franks worked on a variety of water resource management projects in Colorado, New Mexico, California and Nebraska. Frank retired from the Corp of Engineers in California not long after Bertha died. It was there he met Evelyn and remarried.

After retirement, Frank returned to his favorite city, Albuquerque, NM, purchasing house in 1988. Frank and Evelyn quickly developed a close network of friends and remained in Albuquerque the rest of their lives. They were active members of the Heights First Church of the Nazarene.
