Silence Spence was the oldest child of Hiram Gano Gulick (1803-1889) and Mary Spence (1804-1884). Silence came to Seneca County along with his parents and siblings settling in Lodi. Over the years the siblings spread out across the country, some even going back to New Jersey from where the family originated.

Spence died from drowning in Seneca County, NY. The family property was along Lodi Station Rd. which runs parallel to Mill Creek and is only a few hundred yards from Seneca Lake.

**Silence Spence Gulick was probably born in New York as his parents, in every census say they were born in New York. It was the previous generation, Spence's grandparents that came to New York from New Jersey.
