"DIED. In this city, on the 8th inst., AMASA RANSOM, aged 82 years. Funeral to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence of his son, A. R. Ransom, Swan st."
- Buffalo Evening Post [Daily Queen City], Monday, Feb. 10, 1851, p. 2.

Amasa Ransom was b. 7 Jul 1769 (WCR p. 107, just Jul 1769 p. 84), and was baptized in Colchester, CT, on 22 Oct 1769 (Colchester First Congregational Church records 1:35 & 4:102). His parents Elias & Sarah removed from Colchester, CT, to Great Barrington, MA, about 1770, so he was either born in Colchester, or born in Great Barrington and brought back to Colchester to be baptized. There is no definitive answer to this question, as his actual birth is not recorded in either place.

From Charles J. Taylor, History of Great Barrington, Massachusetts (1882), p. 219:
"On the old road, east side of the river, Elias Ransom, from Colchester, Connecticut, located in 1770, apparently having his domicile near the south end of the Little Mountain, north-easterly from the Leavitt mansion. But Mr. Ransom died in 1773, and his widow [Sarah] afterwards married Ichabod Hopkins and remained upon the premises."

Amasa removed to Otsego Co., NY, about 1788, then to Buffalo, NY, about 1815. He was of Warren, NY, in Herkimer Co. next to Otsego Co., at the time of his 1803 marriage to Eunice Flint.

His line: Amasa6 (Elias5, James4, Robert3, Joshua2, Robert1 of Plymouth, MA).

Note: He should not be confused with Amasa Ransom, b. 31 Jan 1769, Lyme, CT, who removed to Woodstock, VT, in 1781!

Marriages:
1) Laura Elderkin [WCR 1903 p. 84] or Louisa Elderkin [WCR 1903 p. 107], 1 Dec 1796, Otsego Twp., Otsego Co., NY.
Per Elderkin records, her name was Louisa, b. 31 Dec 1777, dau. of Rodolphus Elderkin, the source of Amasa Rodolphus Ransom's middle name[*]. Laura was likely an error on the part of WCR. Louisa d. 22 Mar 1800, Otsego Twp., NY.
2) Eunice Flint, 24 Sep 1803, Otsego Twp., NY (WCR 1903 pp. 84 & 107).
"MARRIED: Mr. AMASA RANSOM, of Warren, (N. Y.) to Miss EUNICE FLINT, of this town."
- Windham Herald (Windham, CT), Thursday, 3 Nov 1803, p. 3.
Note: Eunice d. 28 Jul 1859 (WCR 1903 pp. 84 & 107) or 5 Feb 1862 (FAG record), The Grove, Northfield Twp., Cook Co, IL.

[*] Amasa's son Amasa R. Ransom is found in records only with a middle initial. However, ARR's genealogist son John Elderkin Ransom indicated the middle name was Rodolphus (and it appears in many trees as Rudolphus). ARR's own newspaper obituary gave his middle name as Rudolf, but he had a son whose name was definitely Rodolph.

Note: WCR = Wyllys C. Ransom's 1903 Ransom genealogy. Elderkin records = genealogical column, Boston Evening Transcript, Monday, July 1, 1901, p. 11 (indexed in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index/AGBI).
