Leila Borders’ Georgia Certificate of Death lists her father as John Brooks, born in Putnam County, Georgia, and her mother as “unknown,” also born in Putnam County. Her husband was Rev James Buchanan Borders, and the informant for the Certificate was Leila’s son James B. Borders, Jr. Leila Borders died at her home at 105 Roye Street, Macon, and her cause of death was “apoplexy.”

Other historical documents, such as the Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007, lists Leila Borders’ maiden name as Birdsong, with her parents being Jack Birdsong, born in Putnam County, Georgia, and Martha Adams, also born in Putnam County. Since there is reasonable evidence to support this relationship, her maiden on this memorial is listed as Birdsong.

A 1920 Bio posted on her husband’s Memorial cites the following: “In July, 1894, he [James Buchanan Borders] was married to Miss Leila Birdsong, of Putnam County, who was educated at Spelman Seminary and was a successful teacher before her marriage. Their children are James B., Jr., Raymond R., Georgia B., Wm. E. H., Minnie B., Mary Cornelia, and Thomas L. Borders.” Other sources suggest they had at least nine children during their marriage.
