Hazel Marie Toma-Brooks passed away Friday, August 2, 2019 in Jackson, CA, after a short battle with cancer. Hazel was born on November 18, 1925 in San Francisco, California to parents Ciro Louis Toma, Sr., and Nellie Armeda (Biondi) Toma.
Hazel grew up in San Francisco, attending the local elementary school and graduated from St. Paul’s High School in San Francisco. Hazel attended San Francisco College for Women where she obtained her BA in Sociology and Communications, and St. Joseph College of Nursing where she obtained her degree in Nursing. Her career in nursing spanned 31 years. She started her nursing career at Children’s Hospital in San Francisco in 1947 and continued on in her career at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston Illinois, St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Francisco, Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco and finishing back again at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she retired in 1978. She moved her way through her career first as a Staff Nurse in operating rooms, to Head Nurse, to Operating Room Supervisor, and ending her career as Operating Room Supervisor and Assistant Director of Nursing.
Afte retirement, Hazel ventured into the flower business, which was her passion after retirement. She worked in San Francisco with a friend who owned a floral shop that catered to many high profile clients. While working at the hospitals, she met her future husband, George, who, at that time, drove an ambulance. They married in 1982 and started their own journey. Keeping with her passion of decorating and floral, they helped their friends who owned and operated Pastorino’s Pumpkin Farm in Half Moon Bay. Hazel and George managed the pumpkin festival at Pastorino’s for several years, living in San Francisco as well as owning and maintaining their home in Sutter Creek.
Hazel and George moved permanently to Sutter Creek and Hazel became very involved in this community. She was a member of the Sierra Service League, where her love of flowers and decorating was put to great use. She also was a member of the Sutter Amador Hospital Board of Trustees.
Her parents and her husband, George, preceded Hazel in death. Hazel is survived by her brother Ciro Toma and his wife Kim, niece Gina Waklee and her husband Todd, nephew Matthew Toma and his wife Stacy, and niece Jackie Malhotra and her husband John. Great nephews and nieces Zack Waklee, Logan Waklee, Christian Toma, Gianna Toma, Adrien Malhotra and Presley Malhotra, and Great-great niece and nephew Ashley Waklee and Carson Waklee.
Friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service and Rosary on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. A Mass of Christian Burial service will be held on Monday, August 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church in Jackson, followed by interment at Sunset View Cemetery.
