CHARLOTTE - Gail Griffith Dowd, (Mrs. W. Carey Dowd, III), of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996, at Sardis Nursing Home.

The memorial service is 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, at Myers Park Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in Heaton Hall immediately following the memorial service.

Mrs. Dowd was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Greensboro, daughter of the late Brodie Sheppard Griffith and Thelma Wilkinson Griffith. She graduated from 'old' Central High, and Queens College, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. A veteran of World War II, she served as a Lieutenant in the WAVES. Following the war, she did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the Valentine's Day Dance, she was voted "The Sweetheart of the Sweetheart Ball," only to be called on the carpet by the Dean of the Graduate School of Library Science, for "conduct unbecoming a Graduate Student." She met her husband while she was the assistant librarian of Queens College. Following their marriage, they both did graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. A member for many years of the Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. Dowd logged over 1,000 hours as the volunteer receptionist in the Emergency Room. Mrs. Dowd served two years as Chair of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, two years as Chair of the Board of Missions, and one year as Chair of the Board of Education of the Myers Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Dowd was a member of the Charlotte Country Club, the Mint Museum Auxiliary, and The Carolina Club in Chapel Hill

Survivors include her husband W. Carey Dowd III. Children William Carey Down IV, Brodie Griffith Down, Melissa Ann Dowd. and Eloise Dowd Miller and her husband, Carl E. Miller of Monroe; grandchildren, Chris Dowd, Jennifer Dowd, Katherine Dowd, Jessica Dowd, Parker Dowd, all of Charlotte, and Molly Seltzer of Blue Grass, Va.; brother-in-law, Norman L. Moore of Charlotte and Port-au-Prince, Haiti; sister-in-law, Marie Dowd Latimer and her husband, Ben Latimer of Linville and Charlotte. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice, or Myers Park Baptist Church Sunshine Fund, Post Office Box 6006, Charlotte, N.C. 28207-0001. Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mrs. Dowd.
