Buck was the son of William and Elizabeth "Bettie" (Walton) Harper, he and his brothers were born in Tennessee and moved to Indianapolis after their father died and their mom remarried. Buck and his brothers had a grocery on the southwest side of Indy and then later he moved it to hazelwood and reopened it.
