Born in Saskatchewan, Bernie moved to Tacoma with his family in 1923. He was a star athlete at Stadium High School. He started in retail clothing as part of Brotman Brothers, then opened his own Bernie's Men's Wear in 1950, the first of 18 stores. He moved his offices and family to Seattle in 1965, where he opened the Bottoms store, anticipating a denim-wear trend for women. He also owned the Seattle Knitting Mills and helped invent the skinny button-front "penguin sweater." With his brother Morley he helped secure passage of a bond issue to build the Tacoma Dome.
Bernie married Pearl Hart in 1941 in Calgary, Canada. They had two sons: Mike and Jeff. After Pearl's death he married Sally Victor, who died in Morocco in 2009.
