The son of Johann David Gross and Henrietta (Ketzler) Gross, Frederick D. Gross was born in 1858 in Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri. He enlisted in the US Army at Ft. Omaha, Nebraska, as a musician (he had been a music teacher in Clayton, Illinois) in 1881. He was promoted to Chief Musician and Bandmaster of the 5th Cavalry Regiment Band in 1883 at Ft. McKinney, Wyoming.

In 1885, he returned home to marry Georgiana Petrie in Clayton, Illinois. He was discharged from his first enlistment at Ft. Riley, Kansas in 1886 and immediately reenlisted. He was discharged and reenlisted again in 1891 at Ft. Reno, Oklahoma Territory and again at Ft. Sam Houston in 1896 when he was reassigned to and reenlisted in the 10th Infantry Regiment as its Bandmaster.

The 5th Cavalry Regiment was instrumental in maintaining law and order in the Indian/Oklahoma Territories during the great land openings beginning in 1889. The 10th Infantry Regiment served in the Spanish-American War both in Cuba and in the Philippines. His final discharge and reenlistment was at the Exposition Grounds during the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition at Portland, Oregon. He died of a brain tumor at Ft. Lawton in Seattle, Washington a year later.

His wife, Georgiana, and sons Frederick D. Gross and David C. Gross who were both born at Ft. Reno, Oklahoma Territory, survived him.
