James S. Hanna died of consumption at the house of W. C. Whisnand, Rochester, Cass Co., Dak., on the 85h day of July, 1886, at 9 o'clock am, after a lingering illness of five months. Mr. Hanna was born in Illinois on the 13th day of July, 1859. His parents were Scotch Presbyterians. He came to Dakota in April, 1883, where he remained to the time of hid death. He was married, December 10th, 1885, to Miss Mary E. Shelley, and leaves a young wife to mourn his loss. Although having Christian parents, he had never given himself wholly to Christ until last May. He then united with the Presbyterian church and sacrament was administered by Rev. J. J. Baldwin, in his room, as he was too feeble to attend church. From that time his faith grew stronger, until he "fell asleep in Jesus." Mr. Hanna was a young man of a quiet, gentle disposition, beloved by all who knew him, and all his friends seemed to vie with each other to do him a kindness which was always appreciated and rewarded with a pleasant smile. He was called away in the pride of manhood whilst there seemed to be so much to make his life joyous and happy, but he did not murmer under all his great suffering, but was patient and submissive, exclaiming, "They will, oh God, be done." During the latter part of his sickness his thoughts and conversation were wholly on heaven, and he loved to have his friends read the "Word of God" and unite in prayer with him, and would often repeat prayers and poetry that his "angel mother" had taught him in his childhood, and his constant prayer was that his "darling wife" might be a consistent Christian and ere long meet him in heaven.
All was done for him that the best of medical skill and human aid could do, but was of no avail. At his request the remains were buried at Page, Cass Co., Dak. His bereaved wife and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of this entire community.
