A son of Albert C. and Julia Burnham, his father was a successful land owner in the county and founder of of the Trevett-Mattis Bank. His mother was a well known benefactor through whom the Burnham Library and Burnham Hospital were given to the city of Champaign, Illinois. Butnham was educated in local schools and the University of Illinois. After the death of his father, he became the manager of the thousands of acres owned by the estate. He had a keen interest in the bee culture and became one of the well known apiarists of Central Illinois. In addition to the farming and live stock business, he entered the loan business with his brother-in-law, Newton M. Harris. Burnham married May Wilcox of Champaign on December 4, 1895. The couple had three children: Robert, Sidney and Albert. Their home was at 722 W. University Avenue. Active in several Masonic organizations, he was a member of Western Star Lodge NO. 240 A.F. and A.M.
