Abilene - Roy Lewis 81, of Abilene, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in University Church of Christ with Wally Bullington and Bob Scott officiating with burial in Elmwood Memorial Park, under the direction of North's Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St.
Mr. Lewis was born July 16, 1925 to P. G. and Anna Lewis in Midlothian, Texas. While attending high school, he was an assistant Fire Chief for Midlothian Volunteer Fire Department. On many occasions, he volunteered to help pull hoses for the firefighters in Abilene. He received his Bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian College. He married LuGene Bentley June 11, 1950 in Quinlan, Texas. He was a member of the A Capella Chorus. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for McClarty's Food Store, Sunset Stages, Abilene Aero, and Christian Youth Center. He retired from the United States Postal Service after thirty years of service. He flew for Herald of Truth, ACU flew air ambulance and occasionally drove a limo for Jack North. He flew senior citizens over Abilene for five years. He served on the Board of Directors for Harmony Family Services, Christian Homes of Abilene and Herald of Truth. He received the Golden Deeds Award in 1995 from Abilene Exchange Club and Abilene Breakfast Exchange Club. He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Abilene, where he served as President and served as Lt. Gov. for District 35. He received the Hixson Award, Lay Person of the Year, and Kiwanian of the Year. He filmed/videoed for the ACU football team for 35 years and helped with high school and college track meets. He was past president of the Wildcat Club and in 1995 was inducted into the ACU Sports Hall of Fame. He coached Little League baseball and was president of the Eastern Little League, Northern Pony League and Colt League (now known as the Junior/Senior League).
He was a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Memory Men Barber Shop Chorus for thirty years. He was an elder at Highland Church of Christ for thirty-seven years and was currently a member of University Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by; parents, brother LeMoine Lewis, infant brother James Lewis, and son David Lewis.
He is survived by his wife; LuGene Lewis; daughters, Sharon Ball and Jennie Baker both of Abilene; son, Ken Lewis and wife Cathy of Bay City, Texas; sister, Loreta Kelley of Abilene; brothers, Jack Lewis and Clyde Lewis both of Memphis, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Shirley Lewis of Alexandria, Virginia; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
