Funeral service for Mark Smedley, 69 year old resident of Rt. 1 Cove was held Sunday afternoon May 3, 1959 at 2 o'clock at the Cove Church of Christ with Bill Friend officiating. Burial was in the Witherspoon Cemetery at Vandervoort, directed by the Geyer Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jess Upchurch, Buck Cureton, Tom White, Dolan Daniels, Bus Stevenson, J.A. Winfield, Nesbitt Carter and G.H. Cureton.
Mr. Smedley was born December 28, 1889 at Murfreesboro, Ark., and died April 30, 1959 at Mena. He came to Howard County as a child, where he grew to manhood. In 1920 he came to Cove where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He was united in marriage to Miss Altha Izora Cook October 3, 1909 in Howard County, Ark.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Altha Izora Cook Smedley of Cove; four sons, Clifford Buck Smedley of Clovis, N. Mex., Foy C. Smedley of Venita, Ore., Marcus Ray Smedley of Mesquite, Tex., and SSgt. Bobby Lee Smedley of the USAF San Antonio, Tex.; seven daughters, Mrs. Maud Gwendolyn "Gwen" Smedley Fulton of DeSoto, Tex., Mrs. Valencia Meatus Smedley Chambers and Mrs. Florence Adella Smedley Walker of Cove, Mrs. Leana Martha Effie "Pat" Smedley Couch of Tolar, Tex., Mrs. Bonnie Jean Smedley Johnston of Texarkana, Mrs. Betty Lou Smedley Wideman of Petalume, Calif., Mrs. Wanda Arleene Smedley Oliver of Sweet Home, Ore.; four brothers, William Thomas "Tom" Smedley of Hemet, Calif., George Murphy "Murf" Smedley of Hatton, Charley Edward Smedley of Vandervoort and John Pierce Smedley of Cove; also 22 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
