Hiram Shoup (a.k.a. Shaub - original surname) was the eldest son and second child (of 7) of Martin Shoup a.k.a. Shaub (1803-1860) who originated from Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His wife, Hiram's mother, was Rachel A. Thompson (1806-1892), daughter of Nicholas Thompson, who originated from Baltimore, Maryland. Hiram's parents moved to Miami County, Ohio in 1844. After his father Martin died, in 1860, his mother Rachel remarried to Caleb Reeder and removed to Auglaize County, Ohio. All of his younger siblings went with them.

Hiram married Margaret Blickenstaff on February 27, 1861 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Later the couple would move to Houston in Laramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio, then later to Preble County Ohio where wife Margaret died at the early age of 46. The couple had 2 children 1 daughter, Ida Laura, and 1 son William Shaub (1864-1912). In his later years, as a widower, Hiram went to live with his son William and his family in Miami County, Ohio. His son predeceased him in 1912 and his daughter-in-law subsequently remarried. Hiram ended up outliving both of his children.
