Donald Nelson Poist, “Benny”, 86, of Perryville, MD, died October 20, 2017 in Seasons Hospice at Franklin Square Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Born August 25, 1931 in Port Deposit, MD, he was the son of the late Donald Wesley Poist and Madeline Snelling Poist.

Donald was a lifelong member of the Blythedale Seventh Day Adventist Church where he had been very active. He graduated from the Jacob Tome Institute in1950 and served in the US Army from 1952 – 1954 and the US Army Reserves from 1954 – 1959. He was stationed at the US Army Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. After serving in the Army, he was employed at the Perry Point VA Hospital until his retirement in 1986. He was the owner/operator of Poist Custom Draperies along with his wife Carlene. He also was Mayor of Port Deposit from 1979 until 1988 and was a member of the Port Deposit Lions Club.

Benny was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Carlene Buser Poist, 3 sisters, Catherine Bryson, Janet Force, Connie Oppler and 3 grandchildren.

Benny is survived by his sister Joyce Poist Jones and brother Perry Lee Poist, daughters Christine Poist Barclay and her husband Donald of Perryville, Kathy Poist Cuomo and her husband Ralph of Perryville, sons Donald Nelson Poist, Jr. of North East and Michael Allen Poist of Port Deposit, 10 grandchildren and18 great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seasons Hospice in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2017, 11 AM, at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017, 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home. Pastor Ken Coleman of the Blythedale Seventh Day Adventist Church of Perryville, MD, will officiate. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, Port Deposit, MD.
