James enrolled 9-23-1862 serving as a corporal in the First Regiment of Missouri Volunteer Engineers 3rd Battallion; he died in the service of the United States in the State of Missouri on 9-27-1864. Children from this first marriage were Mary Elizabeth "Aunt Lib" Mobley Foster, Martha Angeline "Mattie" Mobley Elliott, William Calvin Mobley, Sylvester Dunlap Mobley, & George Washington Mobley.
