James migrated from Livingston County, Missouri, arriving in Texas circa the 1870's.


His parents were Henry Clay Manning and Sena Arrington, both dying in Livingston County, Missouri, graves unknown.


The original Manning homestead, located outside of Killeen, was passed to Carl E Manning and remained in that family line until just recently.


James H. Manning, along with the Murphy family, donated land for the first Hay Branch school room formerly located on FM 439. Deed record Vol 48, Pg 452, executed 19 Aug 1884. (Update November 2009).


Oral history says James is buried in this cemetery, but no stone has been located.
