The grandson and son of ministers, Andrew's family lived in Mississippi, Georgia and Charlotte NC when he was young. He apparently was successful academically and in sports while at Chapel Hill (now UNC-Chapel Hill).
He was Rector of Statesville NC Trinity Episcopal Church in 1932, and married a local lady in 1933. The 1940 census found them in Fort Myers Florida, which was their home when he was mustered into service for the Navy. He became Lieutenant Commander during World War II, in the Chaplain Corps.
