Services to celebrate the life of Jesse Lee “Jess” Ables, 78, are scheduled for 11 AM Monday at First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Henry Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 10 AM until service time at the church. Jess died on Thursday July, 4, 2019, in Corinth, Mississippi. He was born in Stockdale, Texas and the oldest of three children of John and Jessie Mae Burris Ables.
Early in his childhood it was evident that Jess was a creative and artistic spirit. As a youngster, Jess worked hard jobs in the Stockdale watermelon fields, road construction, and radio, a hobby that he would again enjoy later in life. He was active in sports, band choir, and graduated from Stockdale High School in 1959. After graduation, Jess moved to San Marcos to attend Southwest Texas State College. He excelled in art, music, and even performed in several operas. While in school, he joined the Army National Guard, He eventually moved to Austin to work as a graphics design artist with The Whitley Company and Hart Graphics.
In 1975 he started his own small business, The Brass Works that would be featured several times in Texas Monthly Magazine. Jess was a proud Texan, but would find the love of his life, Dale Johnson, in Corinth, Mississippi. Jess and Dale enjoyed 16 years of marriage together and these years were without a doubt the happiest years of his life.
Jess was a proud father to Buck and Jeff Ables and helped raise them in love as well as old fashioned values that he himself was raised on. He was a talented artist and illustrator and enjoyed many years at Ables Original Art Studio in downtown Corinth. He greatly enjoyed doing sketches and drawings for the local people of Corinth. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and officer of the Alcorn County HAM radio club, and served on the board of the Corinth Art Guild.
Jess was a generous man and knew no stranger. It was second nature for Jess to be kind and accommodating with the caregiving of his in-laws for many years. He always treated them like they were his own. He was full of patience and could always “fix it”. He was a great husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many people.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie Mae Ables; aunt, Clara Jo Floyd, sister-in-law, Lea Ann Ables, and a son John “Buck” Ables. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Dale Ables; brother-in-law, Tony Johnson (Marilyn); son, Jeff Ables (Teresa); granddaughters, Maegan Ables Whitaker (Jared), Kate Ables, Abby Ables; brother, Arthur Owen Ables; sister, Jo Ann Carson (W.C.); great-grandson, John Michael Whitaker, and a host of nieces and nephews. Jess also was an honorary Papaw to Holden and Grayson Nickels and Murphy, Lenleigh, Susanna, Colin, and Neeley Dobbs.
