James F. Oates, Jr.

CHILLICOTHE: James F. Oates, Jr., 84, of Chillicothe, died 9:20 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 in the Adena Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born May 4, 1930, in Pennsboro, WV to the late Frank and Esta B. Mason Oates. He married the former Jeanette W. Burns who died June 1, 2005.

Surviving are a special friend and companion for over 38 years, Betty Shoop, of Chillicothe; a son, Jeffery A. (Julie) Oates, of Chillicothe; a daughter, Jeri A. (Melvin C.) Schoch, of Rush, KY; grandchildren, Kasey Jo Shoemaker, Katie L. Shoemaker, James Bradley (Cheryl) Oates, Tristen (Melissa) Carter, Jarred (Bethany) Oates, Logan Oates, Lindsey Oates and Alyssa Oates; two great grandchildren; Betty's children, Shirley Sundy, of Pennsylvania, Timothy L. Shoop, of Tennessee and Heather Shoop, of Ohio; brothers, Larry Oates, of Oberlin, OH and Deen (Alice) Oates, of Allen, TX; sisters, Betty Oates, of Chillicothe, Jean Oates, Beverly (Bill) Tyo and Carolyn (Harry) Barlage, all of Chillicothe; sisters-in-law, Wanda Oates and Beulah Oates, both of Chillicothe; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, James A. Oates; sisters, Peggy Conley, Nikki Oates, Nancy Oates and Pam Coverstone and brothers, Olin, Clarence "Pickle", Donald, Norvel and William Oates.

James retired from the former Goodyear Atomic Plant. He had served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. James was a member of the American Legion Post 62 and the Pike Pickers. He played music at numerous nursing homes and at the Ross County and Pike County Senior Centers. James had hosted many bean dinners for family and friends, was the soundman for the Paint Valley Jamboree and was a longtime sports official. He was also a past member of the Huntington Township Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2014 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call at Ware's from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Pike County Senior Center 402 Clough Street Waverly, OH 45690 or to the Ross County Senior Center 1824 Western Avenue Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.
