Peter Overholtzer was raised in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. He married Hannah Mohler in the early 1850s. They reared seven children. Peter was an itinerant Brethren minister and they lived variously in Ohio and Polo, Illinois, before traveling in a wagon train to Stockton, California, in 1864. Two years later, they traveled back to Pennsylvania via the Isthmus of Panama to visit friends and family. In 1867 they moved to Kingston, Missouri, where they lived for six years. They moved from Missouri to Myrtle Point, Oregon, in 1873. In 1885, they sailed from the southwestern Oregon coast to San Francisco. They traveled inland to visit their daughter Anna who lived in Lathrop near Stockton. They then traveled by horse and wagon south to Lemon (now Walnut) where they purchased 40 acres. In 1888 they moved to Covina where they purchased land on Rowland Avenue (Double Drive). Peter presided at the Covina Church of the Brethren until 1895. He died of consumption in 1896.
