John Franklin Hackenberg, 68, Middleburg RD2, a self-employed painter, died 25 February 1980 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born July 9, 1911, he was the son of the late John and Cora Napp Hackenberg. His wife, the former Sara Gearhart, died in 1969.

Mr. Hackenberg served in the army during WWII, assigned to the 980th Field Artillery Battalion and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, and several German invasions. He was a member of the William S. Kerstetter Disabled American Veterans Post 24, Middleburg; Middleburg VFW 5640; New Berlin American Legion; Selinsgrove Loyal Order of Moose; and the Local Painters Union No. 41.

He is survived by four sons, John of Mechanicsburg, Dale of New Cumberland, Lynn of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Dennis of Middleburg RD1; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Frances Saylor of Beavertown, Mrs. Anna Stroup of Harleysville and Mrs. Betty Kline of Biglerville; and three brothers, Russell of Gardners, Joshua of Watsontown and Robert of Albion, N.Y.

The funeral will be conducted at 11am Thursday in the Hassinger Funeral Home, Middleburg, by the Rev. Lloyd Shellenberger. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Troxelville. A military service will be conducted at the grave by the New Berlin American Legion and the Middleburg VFW.
