Charles' Obituary
CHARLES De Vore Jr.

Charles (Chuck) De Vore Jr. was born March 18, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa and passed away June 24, 2019 in Des Moines. He was the only son of C. Allen and Evelyn De Vore. He lived nearly all of his life in Indianola, Iowa with a short amount of time in Texas in Jr. High.

In school Chuck participated in music, athletics, newspaper, and yearbook. Chuck became a nickname in junior high at the calling of Coach England, one of the coaches and teachers that helped shape his ideas on life.He graduated from Indianola High School in 1959. After high school, Chuck attended Simpson College in Indianola and with guidance from two high school teachers, Mr. Grange and Mr. Sjeklocha, he chose to major in education and become a teacher himself. He later taught with one of those teachers at Indianola High School. While at Simpson Chuck met a blond girl from Newton, Iowa. After dating for two years, they were married on August 9, 1964. Karen became the foundation of his life. In addition to Karen, Chuck is survived by his children, Dawn Linn (David) Amundson of Elgin, Iowa and Scott (Holly) De Vore of Las Vegas. He will be remembered by his four grandchildren, Emily, Camryn, Thomas, and Mason who were the pride in his life. He is also survived by his two first cousins, Donald (Alice) De Vore and Virginia Tapper; plus second cousins and many friends. Chuck taught for 35 at three high schools, Madrid, Pleasantville and the last 29 proudly at Indianola High School. He was a fixture at most IHS sporting events over those 29 years even when his own children were not participating. His one reminder to every US Government class was, “If you don’t vote, don’t gripe!”

In addition to teaching, Chuck volunteered for many years with the local fire department taking photos at accidents and fires. This work earned him the nicknames, “10-4 De Vore” and “Fire Truck Chuck”. He also enjoyed spending summer vacations fishing with his father-in-law, Ben Klouda and his kids either on an Iowa farm pond or on a lake in Ontario, Canada. He had a love of books and reading and collected an extensive library.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law Ben and Leona Klouda, and aunts and uncles.
