Jerry D. Allen, associate professor of theater at Lycoming College, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at the age of 64.

Jerry was born in Burley, Idaho, and received a BFA and MFA at Utah State University. He taught at Weber State in Ogden, Utah, the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., and the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. Jerry joined the Lycoming College faculty in 1984 and spent his entire career in theater and worked in virtually every area of theater production from onstage acting and directing to back stage production, but costume and stage design was what he enjoyed the most. He was an incredibly talented artist, a great storyteller, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was always quick to laugh. Jerry also had a special interest in children's theater. In 1994, he founded the Emerald City Players, comprised of Lycoming College Theater students which brought children's theater for area schools. Also, he worked with the Red Cross for their Fete de Cuisine, designed many costumes for Keuka College's Barn Theatre, and worked with a theater in Scranton.

He was predeceased by his parents, Cleve and Adine Allen; his sister, Kay E. Lee; and brothers, C. Max Allen and Bill G. Allen. Jerry is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, James and Ashleigh Thompson of Harrisburg, Pa.; and his son and daughter-in-law, Bryn and Bridget Allen of Williamsport, Pa.; and five grandchildren. Jerry was formerly married to Kathleen McPhee Allen for 35 years, and they remained friends until his death.

There will be a celebratory gathering for friends, family, students and alumni from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Lycoming College's Mary L. Welch Theater.
