The son of Frederick Sebascus & Elizabeth Catherine (Bishop) Crumlich or Cromleigh, he married Eliza Susan Wiley and fathered John W. (b. @1853), Isabella Jane (b. @1856), Elmira Alice (b. @1859), Daniel Wesley (b. 05/17/62), Mary Ellen (b. 10/10/64 - married Orlando Brayshaw), and Jacob M. (b. 11/??/69). In 1860, he was a cooper living in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although the 1863 draft registration lists him as a resident of Monaghan Township, York County. He stood 6' 2" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-one in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private with Co. B, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York. This regiment is not listed in his wife's widow's pension application although it appears on his tombstone.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-three in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 2 as a corporal with Co. D, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was reduced to ranks February 13, 1865, but re-promoted to corporal May 1, 1865. He was absent sick at muster-out and no discharge date is found in his compiled military service records, but the regiment discharged to date August 3, 1865. This is the only regiment included in his wife's widow's pension index even though the tombstone contains only the 166th Pennsylvania service.
