Pfc. Bentz of Millville, New Jersey was a 2004 graduate of Clayton High School who played soccer all four years. He joined the Army taking basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He wanted to be a paratrooper, but at about 155 pounds and pushing 5 feet, 10 inches, D.J. was placed in another line of duty. He also considered law enforcement, the Air Force and the Coast Guard before finally joining the Army. From the time he arrived in Iraq less than a year prior to the day he died, Bentz never regretted working on an Army personnel carrier. His grandfather, the late David Bentz Sr., also served in the Army and was active during the Korean War. His grandfather, Charles W. Atkinson died just two weeks later. David was killed when the Army vehicle he was driving was struck by enemy fire at age 20. He was on a mission to deliver medicine to a village in Iraq.
