Allen Grady Wallis, 57, prominent civic and church leader and former teacher in the city schools, died Monday night, O ctober 13, at a local hospital where he has been a patient since a heart attack eight days ago.

Mr. Wallis was well-known and had many friends here. A native of Cadiz, Ky., he came here to Gastonia in 1924 and lived here the remained of his life. He was active in the work of the First Baptist Church here, and served as clerk of the church since 1937. He had been a church deacon sin ce 1934. Mr. Wallis was also a member of the Gastonia Civitan Club and was a Mason.

Funeral services were held October 15 at 4:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church conducted by the pastor of Mr. Wallis.

Active pallbearers were Augustus Froneberger, S. A. Burts, W. M. Farris, W. B. Hair, Max Parris and Robrt D Lingerfeldt. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the First Baptist Church and the following Frank L. Ashley, D. A. French, Ed S. Kempton, Luke Wilson, Zel Harry, Oscar Vaughn, J. Fred Rawlins, Sr. and Robert Secrest of Chester, S. C.

Mr. Wallis leaves his widow, Mrs. Katherine Leneave Wallis, a native of Cadiz, Ky., a daughter Mrs. Fred J. Rawlins, Jr., of Cadiz and Gastonia; and four brothers and sisters. The brothers are M.C. Wallis, Calvert city, Ky., I.M. Wallis, of Louisville,Ky., V. W. Wallis of wickliffe, Ky; and L.D. Wallis of Johnson City, Tenn. Sisters are Mrs. Henry Hartigan of Princeton, Ky., Mrs. Homer Freeman of Louisville, Ky; Mrs. Ramey Johnson of Princeton,Ky., and Mrs. H. H. Gray of Cadiz, Ky.

Mr. Wallis was born in Cadiz, Ky; November 28, 1889, the son of the late Irvin J. and Mary Isabell Wallis. He attended high school in Cadiz and then entered Western Kentucky Teachers College. After graduating he attended business college in Paducah, Ky., and late graduated from Bowling Green College of Commerce.

On October 3, 1917, Mr. Wallis entered the U. S. Army and served with and infantry company until his discharge July 10, 1918. He returned to Kentucky and resumed his career as a commercial teacher.

He married Sarah Katherine "Kitty" Leneave on November 9, 1920

In 1924 Mr. Wallis started as a commercial teacher at Gastonia High School and resigned in 1934 to become full time secretary of the First Baptist Church. Later he bought and managed Brookwood Grocery, from which business he first retired about a year ago. Burial was in the Hollywood cemetery at Gastonia, N.C.
