The son of Adam Zachariah & Frances Maria (Hitchcock) Hayner, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Less than a year later, he was residing in Perry County, possibly with his brother Edward Becker Hayner although that is unverified.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of twenty-one in Perry County August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a corporal with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863. His brother Edward was killed in action near Petersburg, Virginia, June 17, 1864, just weeks before his schedule discharge.

Henry married Henrietta Carpenter ca. 1869 and fathered Edward B. (b. 06/30/70), Martin Henry (b. 02/08/76), and Samuel Willard (b. 02/17/85). By 1870, he was living with his family in Illinois but later relocated to Creston, Union County, Iowa, where he joined Potter Post No. 440, G.A.R., and died at his son Samuel's home.
