Cornelius did not have good health and he never helped much on the farm, but became a barber. In the spring of 1884, he engaged to drive a wagon for a neighbor who was moving to Kansas. The neighbor settled near Meade and Cornelious took a timber claim somewhere in that region. It took five years to prove up a claim and after five years he acquired title, then sold it and purchased an 80 acre farm north of Kinsley. He also opened a barber shop in town. He died in the spring of 1885 and was buried in Blanchard, Iowa.
